Best time to visit the Azores

Thanks to its mid-Atlantic location, the Azores has a mild, subtropical climate all year. There's never really a bad time to go, but depending on what you're after, some months might be better than others.

  • Spring (March - May) - Cooler temps of 14°C-18°C (57°F-64°F) with lush landscapes in full bloom. Ideal for hiking, exploring nature and avoiding crowds.
  • Summer (June - August) - The warmest months ranging from 18°C-25°C (64°F-77°F). Perfect for swimming, whale watching and island-hopping, but is also the busiest season.
  • Autumn (September - November) - Comfortable temperatures ranging from 17°C-22°C (62°F-72°F). The sea is still great for swimming and the crowds start to thin out.
  • Winter (December to February) - Cooler temperatures of 14°C-18°C (57°F-64°F) and much wetter weather, but still mild compared to mainland Europe. Great for hot springs, hiking and a much quieter experience.

When is the best time to go to the Azores?

For the best mix of warm weather and fewer crowds, consider flying to the Azores islands from late spring to early autumn (June to October). You'll have the best experience with whale-watching, won't miss out on the island's festivals, and can enjoy hiking and exploring with very little rain.
