South America has become an increasingly popular location among backpackers recently, attracted by its tropical and diverse nature and landscapes. This South America travel guide highlights some of the most stunning locations in South America such as the Andes Mountains, Patagonia, Machu Picchu and the Amazon Rainforest, a nature's paradise and an opportunity for some of the greatest adventures. The most common route that tourists take around South America starts in Colombia and ends in Argentina.
As a whole, travelling in South America is cheap, depending on the activities you partake in and the countries you choose to visit. Venezuela is currently advised not to travel to. If you’re interested in finding out the average cost of food, accommodation and activities, check out our blog on South America’s cheapest countries.
South America has a vibrant and interesting history, big and beautiful cities filled with colonial architecture, some of the most stunning natural landscapes on earth, incredible wildlife, and so much more to offer the adventurous traveller. The city life all over the continent is also one of a kind!
The hottest months of the year in South America are December through February. December is one of the busiest travel seasons in South America and one to avoid if you want to travel on a budget because airfares and other costs can be higher than usual. Their winter season is from June through August.
The best time to go travelling South America is from September to November if you're planning on spending a few months there because this is the season when the weather is most dry and the temperature is perfect. However, in most South American countries the weather is not very restrictive at any time of the year. If you’ve always wanted to see the Galapagos Islands, book a trip around this period as well. There’s minimal rainfall, and much of the island’s wildlife is active. It’s best to plan your trip to Peru in the dry season, which is May through September. This time of year is peak season in Peru but guarantees sunny days that won’t interfere with your plans.

One of the best places to begin your backpacking South America experience is Colombia. The nation has a wide range of wonderful attractions to choose from that will exceed all of your travel desires at a reasonable cost.
To enter the country, we suggest taking a flight into El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogotá, the lively capital, which serves connections to Europe and North America. The area is famous for mouthwatering cuisine, strong history, energetic nightlife and colourful art, similar to other major cities within the country, such as Medellín and Cali, which are some of the best places to visit in South America. In Medellin, you can experience an innovative modern city with spring-like weather. Cali is also known as the capital of salsa, an activity which is a must when visiting.
If you’re a thrill seeker, take a trip over to San Gil in the northeast, which is a perfect location for rafting, hiking and caving. Whilst in the north visit Cartagena, one of the most popular cities in Colombia amongst travellers, for its colonial buildings and breathtaking sandy beaches, great for surfing. No matter where you are in Colombia, you’ll be sure to find a dynamic party scene.
Head to Salento if you’re looking to unwind with great hiking locations, and some of the best coffee around. The town of Zipaquirá near Bogota, home of the Salt Cathedral, is another must-visit destination for its unique underground salt mine cathedral. Santa Marta, the jump-off point for Minca – a charming mountain town – and Tayrona National Park, is also worth a visit.
A few major US cities have direct flights to Colombia through airlines such as Delta Air Lines and American Airlines. You can fly from a handful of European countries to Colombia with airlines including Air Europa and Avianca. If you’re travelling from other Latin American countries, there are plenty of flight options through LATAM and Wingo. If you’re seeking adventure travel experiences or adore nature, you’ll be spoilt for choice when visiting Ecuador, the world’s most bio-diverse country. There really is a tonne to do, from exploring the Amazon jungle by canoeing the river system to climbing an Andean peak or making the most of the fantastic surfing opportunities. It can be an excellent location for those relaxing getaways too, as it has multiple stunning beaches that are worth discovering, Canoa being a tourist favourite.
Quito International Airport (UIO) is the airport we recommend flying into, as it has connections to multiple other South American countries, North America and a small number of European countries. Once arriving in Quito, be sure to stay a couple of nights to experience their bustling nightlife, rich culture and outstanding restaurants. The city is located near popular national parks, such as the Cotopaxi National Park; Ecuador’s 2nd highest peak.
As Ecuador is full of natural beauty and mind-blowing scenery, national parks are found throughout the country, particularly among the Andes, Amazon and coastal region, so we recommend researching beforehand to decide which ones you most want to visit. Luckily, getting from one location to another will take no more than a few hours by car in most cases, due to Ecuador’s size. With more than 500 different species of birds calling the Mindo cloud forest home, it is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Also, it boasts some exceptional plant diversity and an array of butterflies, some of nature’s most beautiful.
The volcanic island archipelago known as the Galápagos islands are amazing to visit for their unique plant diversity and animal species. Nonetheless, due to their high visitor demand, visiting these islands is one of the priciest things to do in Ecuador, though it is well worth the cost if it falls within your spending plan.
Direct flights to Ecuador from international destinations are limited, so it is best to start your trip in one of the more easily accessible countries, such as Bogotá, Colombia, where you can fly directly with Avianca or other airlines. A small number of US cities have direct flights to Ecuador through airlines such as JetBlue and American Airlines. There are limited flights from Europe to Ecuador, which are offered by Air Europa and KLM. Getting connecting flights will be required to reach Ecuador from Asia, Africa or Oceania, as there are no routes non-stop from these locations.
When travelling within Ecuador, flights are moderately priced. It has 6 airlines operating domestic flights, which include Avianca Ecuador, LATAM Ecuador, TAME Airlines (Ecuador’s flag carrier), and Aeroregional Ecuador.

As the connections are limited it will be easier to start your trip in a country nearby and use ground transport to enter Bolivia, or fly if a route is available. Air Europa and Boliviana de Aviación are the only two airlines connecting Bolivia directly to Europe. Boliviana de Aviación is the only airline which offers a route to North America, flying into Miami. Since there are no direct flights to Bolivia from Asia, Africa or Oceania, a connecting flight will be required.
