Best time to visit the French Alps

The French Alps are a year-round destination, with each season offering something different. The best time to go will depend on what you're after:

  • Winter (December to February) - This is peak ski season with the best snow conditions in February. It's perfect for skiing and snowboarding, but you should expect busy resorts.
  • Spring (March to May) - A mixture of late-season skiing and emerging hiking trails. It's quieter than winter, with milder temperatures.
  • Summer (June to August) - These months are ideal for hiking, mountain biking and outdoor adventures. The warmest months (10°C-24°C) but also the busiest.
  • Autumn (September to November) - Cooler and more peaceful, with fewer tourists. Great for hiking before winter sets in, however, some higher-altitude areas start to see early snowfall.


When is the best time to go to the French Alps?

  • Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport (LYS) in France. Located slightly west of the popular French ski resorts, with the closest resorts located about 100km away. Fly here to reach Les Trois Vallées and La Plagne.
  • Turin Airport (TRN) in Italy. Turin Airport is also only 100km away from the French Alps and is another great place to touch down if you're after a French skiing holiday. Fly here to reach Serre Chevalier and Vallée de la Clarée.
