Airlines that operate domestic flights within Ghana
Currently, there are two airlines that fly within Ghana. Both of these airlines are Ghanian and offer flights to most destinations within the country.
Africa World Airlines
Africa World Airlines is a Ghanian airline that offers internal flights, as well as international flights to/from the country.
The airline's hub airport is at Kotoka International Airport (ACC), Accra from where it offers domestic flights to Kumasi, Takoradi, Tamale and Wa.
As well as offering domestic flights from Accra, the airline also flies between other destinations in Ghana. For example, it flies between Tamale and Wa a number of times a week.
Passion Air
PassionAir is a Ghanian airline that only offers domestic flights. The airline is based at Kotoka International Airport (ACC), Accra and flies regularly to and from Tamale and Kumasi. The airline uses the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400, which is the largest plane for a domestic flight within Ghana. This means it has the ability to carry the most number of passengers on a single flight within the country.
Although the airline flies from Accra to Tamale and Kumasi, at the moment, it doesn't fly between Tamale and Kumasi or any other destinations within Ghana.
Why book domestic flights within Ghana?
With one of Africa's fastest-growing capitals, tropical greenery, rainforests and beautiful beaches, Ghana is a joy to visit, with a variety of things to do and see.
Although Ghana isn't a particularly large country, travelling between cities can take a long time by road. For example. travelling from the country capital in the south of Ghana, Accra to the northern city, Tamale can take up to 12 hours. Whereas, a flight between the same two destinations is only one hour long.
Flying around Ghana is by far the best way to travel if you don't have time to waste, getting you from A to B in a quick and safe manner. Another great thing about flying within Ghana is that you can reach all the major destinations in the country from Accra. This is especially good if you're an international traveller, as Accra is home to Kotoka International Airport — the main international airport in Ghana.
What are domestic flights?
A domestic flight in Ghana is any flight that leaves in one destination within Ghana and arrives at another destination within Ghana. For example, an internal flight within Ghana is a flight that departs from its capital city, Accra and arrives in the central city of Kumasi.
At the moment, the only airlines that offer local flights within Ghana are Ghanaian airlines. There are no international airlines that fly between destinations within the country.
Most domestic flights depart from the countries capital, Accra and fly to several other destinations within the country. Although, there are some airlines that offers flights between other destinations within the country too.

For local flights within Ghana, check-in generally closes 40 minutes before scheduled flight departure time. Although, it's always best to check with the airline that you're flying with, just in case there's a change on your itinerary.

Do I need a passport for domestic flights in Ghana?
No, you don't need a passport for domestic flights within Ghana. However, you will need some form of photo identification that is issued by a government body. If you do decide to use your passport as identification, it needs to be valid and in date.
How early do I need to arrive for domestic flights in Ghana?
Most airlines close the check-in counters 40 minutes before flight departure time. So, it's recommended that you arrive well in advance of this.
In general, airport check-in counters open two hours before flight departure time, so arriving around this time will give you plenty of time to check-in.
If you've checked in online, you can arrive at the airport later than this.
