PNG Air launched in 1987 under the name Milne Bay Air and initially offered charter flights. In 1997, the airline rebranded as Airlines PNG and began operating its first scheduled passenger flights to various destinations in Papua New Guinea. The airline rebranded again in 2015 to PNG Air, which is what it's known as today. PNG Air is one of the top choices for domestic flights within the country, with more domestic destinations within its route network than any other airline in the country.

PNG Air also flies contracted charter flights for corporate clients.

Baggage Policy

With PNG Air flights, passengers are entitled to one item of free carry-on baggage. Checked baggage rules vary depending on your route.

Carry-on Baggage

On board a PNG Air flight, passengers are entitled to one item of free carry-on baggage with a maximum weight of 7 kg (15 lbs). This baggage must not exceed the overall dimensions of 105 cm (41") (l + w + h).

Checked Baggage

Passengers flying domestically within Papua New Guinea Air are entitled to 16 kg (35 lbs) of free checked baggage.

Passengers connecting to or from an international flight from another carrier are entitled to 23 kg (50 lbs) of free checked baggage.

All baggage must not exceed the overall dimensions of 158 cm (62") (l + w + h) and, if excess baggage is purchased, no one piece of baggage can weigh more than 32 kg.

Check-In

Online and airport check-in is available for PNG Air flights. Opening and closing times vary.

Online Check-In

Passengers can check in online for their PNG Air flight by using the PNG Air check-in page and finding their booking on the 'Manage my booking' section. Passengers will need to enter their surname and booking reference. You'll need to check in 1 hour before the scheduled departure of your PNG Air flight. If you don't have baggage to check in, arrive at the airport no later than 30 minutes before the departure.

Airport Check-In

Passengers must check in at the airport of departure to complete check-in for their PNG Air flight. To ensure that passengers give themselves enough time to check in, drop off any checked baggage and pass security, it's recommended that you check in between 2 hours and 30 minutes before your scheduled departure. Gates close promptly 30 minutes before departure.

Passengers at check-in must present ID at check-in. ID can be in the form of personal ID, a pre-arranged password or a printed version of the PNG Air e-ticket.

Cabin Classes

PNG Air only has one cabin class: Economy.

Economy Class

Economy Class is the only cabin class that PNG Air offer. During the flight, passengers will experience exceptional service from the cabin crew, along with comfortable and spacious seating arrangements.

Seats

Seats are set out in a 2 x 2 formation. The Economy Class cabin will have 36 or 72 seats, depending on which aircraft is flown. Each seat offers 30–31" (76–78 cm) of seat pitch.

In-Flight Entertainment

The airline doesn't have an in-flight entertainment system on its flights. However, each passenger is provided with the latest copy of the airline's in-flight magazine, which various interesting articles, including guides to PNG Air's tourist spots.

Wi-Fi

There's no WIFI system onboard PNG Air flights.

Food

Passengers can enjoy a range of snacks and drinks, served by the airline's cabin crew. This includes a choice of tea, coffee, water and more.

Frequent Flyer

PNG Air isn't a member of any frequent flyer program at this time.

Previously, the airline was a member of the Velocity frequent flyer program. This allowed PNG Air passengers to earn and spend Velocity points on PNG Air flights and a number of partner companies and partner airlines, including tigerairHainan AirlinesAlitaliaSingapore AirlinesSilkAir and more.

Airline Alliance

PNG Air isn't a member of any airline alliance. However, the airline has a codeshare agreement with Virgin Australia, which allows them to offer flights to destinations in Australia.

Hub Airport

Jacksons International Airport

Jacksons International Airport (POM) is an international airport in Papua New Guinea and is the main hub for PNG Air. The airport is the largest and busiest airport in Papua New Guinea and the main gateway into the country. PNG Air has used Jacksons International as its main hub since it launched scheduled flights in 1997. The airport has one runway and two terminals — one domestic terminal and one international terminal. PNG Air mainly flies from the domestic terminal but does use the international terminal for flights to Australia.

The only other airlines to use Jacksons International Airport as a hub are Link PNG and Air Niugini.

Fleet

The airline operates a fleet of regional jets, with a mix of ATR 72-600s and Dash 8-100s. The airline has more than 20 aircraft within its fleet overall. PNG Air has an order in place with ATR with plans to phase out the older Dash 8 aircraft over the next 5 years and replace them with the ATR.

Cancellation Policy

On most fares, PNG Air flights are non-refundable if cancelled. This means that if a passenger needs to cancel their flight, they'll lose their money.

The only fare that allows passengers to cancel their flight for a refund is the Corporate Advantage fare. This allows passengers to cancel their flight for a full refund (minus the administration fee) up to 14 days before their flight is scheduled to depart.

What's the difference between PNG Air and Airlines PNG?

Airlines PNG, or Air PNG, was the name that PNG Air used to use before it rebranded in 2015. The airline originally launched as Milne Bay Air. It rebranded to Airlines PNG in 1997 and then rebranded again as PNG Air in 2015. Some people still refer to PNG Air as Air PNG to this day.
