Things to do in Monaco

Thinking of visiting Monaco but unsure where to start? Here are some great activities to include in your trip!

The Oceanographic Museum's exterior is breathtaking. It's a tall, thin building that sits on a cliffside. Its white stone walls and arched windows are captivating enough, but what makes the museum so fascinating is what lies inside it.

Explore the ocean through the museum's diverse marine life. It's an aquarium that hosts around 350 different species, with over 6,000 fish in total. Sharks, clownfish, seahorses and many more swim in the towering tanks. Feel like you're gliding deep in the ocean as you watch the schools of fish swim by.

One of the museum's integral beliefs is the convention of marine life and it does this through caring for its creatures, raising awareness on the state of the ocean and reducing waste.

For adults, tickets will cost around €22.50, whilst young people between 4-17 get in for just €14.00.

Relax at Larvotto Beach

Monaco's main public beach is Larvotto. If you want to spend some of your holiday unwinding under the sun, then a trip to Larvotto is a must.

It's a human-made beach comprised of pebbles that are so fine they almost look like sand. You won't have to worry about the beach's surface being uncomfortable, though. Just like sand, the pebbles are so thin that they're perfect to lie on, providing the ideal surface to sunbathe. Unlike sand, however, the pebbles are easy to brush off, so you won't have to worry about finding any granules in your hair days later!

The crystal clear waters are excellent for swimming in, especially during the summer months, when the weather's warm and anti-jellyfish nets are placed in the water for added protection.

There are plenty of shops along the beachfront, from ice cream parlours to souvenir stores, giving you everything you need to spend the entire day at the beach.

Monaco's Japanese Garden, officially the Princess Grace Japanese Garden, is an essential visit for nature lovers. Its serene views of green foliage and vibrant flowers will relax and inspire.

The gardens present a unique blend of Japanese and Monacan cultures. Most of the plants are native to Monaco to ensure they can survive the country's Mediterranean climate. However, they've been pruned to replicate a Japanese style.

Walk across bridges and jump from stone to stone as you explore the garden's separate islands. While you explore, you'll find waterfalls and ponds. Some of the ponds contain Koi Fish, a colourful species of fish that are of Japanese origin. Fun fact, Koi Fish can grow to be as long as 3 feet!

There's also a tea house available at the gardens, serving traditional Japanese teas.

Other than the drinks at the tea house, visiting the garden is entirely free.

Monaco Do's and Don'ts

Do walk/ cycle 🚲

Monaco's roads can get very congested. If you're visiting the country, walking between destinations will save you both time and money. Considering it takes just 45 minutes to walk from one side of Monaco to the other, renting a car is pretty much pointless.

Don't wear beachwear unless you're at the beach 🩱

Bikinis and swimming shorts are perfectly fine to wear at the beach or the poolside but could result in a nasty fine if worn while walking around the streets or at a restaurant. People in Monaco tend to dress in 'relaxed luxury' with comfortable but pristine clothes, so if you're at a restaurant, your swimming trunks just aren't going to cut it.

Don't walk around barefoot unless at the beach 👣

This is another finable offence. If you walk anywhere in Monaco shoeless (unless you're at the beach) and the police catch you, you're at risk of receiving a fine. Things like sandals and flip-flops don't count towards this rule; it's only if you literally have nothing on your feet.

Don't step in the cycle lanes ⛙

Cycling is a popular mode of transport in Monaco, and because of this, there are dedicated cycle lanes. To avoid getting yourself or the cyclist hurt, it's important not to walk in these lanes. In Monaco, the cycle lanes are clearly marked by white lines and have a green-painted figure of a cyclist on the floor.
