Laos is often nicknamed the Land of a Million Elephants in remembrance of the ancient kingdom Lan Xang, where large numbers of elephants would graze. While the elephant population in Laos has steadily declined, they continue to remain a national symbol. If you're lucky enough, you might see one on your travels.

History is very important to Laos. It's a living landmark of the Vietnam War, during which it became the 'most bombed' country in the world, per capita. Despite these hardships, the country's natural beauty remains strong. It's a nation of lush green rainforests and stunning mountain regions, including the Annamite Range, which acts as a border between the country and Vietnam.

Discover Vientiane

Vientiane is a city overflowing with history, from its time as the capital of Lan Xang's kingdom to how it shaped itself once Laos gained independence from French rule. Hear the tales of a time long ago accompanied by a glass of Lao-Lao (ເຫລົ້າລາວ), a delicious Laotian rice whisky.

Start your journey at Wat Si Muang, a hub for Buddhism during the Enlightenment era. Here, you will see religious architecture and artefacts that date back to 1563. This serene site is a popular pilgrimage location where people go to pay their respects.

If you want to learn more about Vientiane during the Vietnam War, take a harrowing walk through the COPE Visitor Centre. The devastating effects the Vietnam War had on the nation are upsetting and serve as an essential reminder of the suffering of war.

Laos Do's and Don'ts

To avoid putting yourself or the people around you in an awkward situation, we've compiled some do's and don'ts to be aware of before your trip to Laos.

  • Do get a visa - Most nationalities travelling to Laos must obtain a visa before arrival.
  • Do bring cash - Although there are plenty of ATMs in tourist parts of the country, bringing cash is always a good idea. In Laos, the official currency is the KIP, but many places also take the US dollar.
  • Do dress modestly - When visiting remote villages or religious sites, dress modestly. This means showing little of your legs and shoulders for women, and for men, wear long trousers and sleeves.

  • Don't touch anyone with your feet - Be careful where you step. Even accidentally knocking someone with your foot is considered disrespectful in Laos.
