Buta Airways merged with Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) in October 2023. All flights that Buta Airways previously flew are now operated and sold by Azerbaijan Airlines. Therefore, when searching for flights on the Alternative Airlines site, look for Azerbaijan Airlines.
When it operated Buta Airways was an airline based out of Baku. The airline mainly operated international flights from its hub airport at Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport, along with a small number of domestic flights within Azerbaijan.
The airline was a full subsidiary of Azerbaijan Airlines and was set-up in 2016 under the name AZALJet. The purpose of AZALJet was to give a low-cost alternative to Azerbaijan Airlines flights. In 2017, AZALJet suspended operations and it was announced that the airline would completely restart under the 'Buta Airways' name.
In 2018, the airline flew its inaugural flights with a service between Baku and Sophia. Shortly thereafter, a number of additional routes were added to countries within Europe and West Asia.
Today, Buta Airways now operates as a low cost fare class called "Buta Budget" under Azerbaijan Airlines brand AZAL - Azerbaijan Airlines operated flights still use the IATA and IACO identifiers 'J2' and 'AHY', as well as the call sign 'AZAL'.
Buta Airway's had different baggage policies for carry-on and checked baggage.
Carry-on baggage was able to be purchased as an extra to the free checked baggage allowance. There was no carry-on baggage weight limit, however, bags had to fit within the dimensions of 55 cm x 35 cm x 20 cm.
Passengers were entitled to 10kg free carry-on baggage with the maximum dimensions of 158 cm overall. Additional carry-on baggage was available for a charge.
Passengers were also able to purchase checked baggage of up to 23kg, with the maximum dimensions of 158cm overall.
Buta Airways had different check-in opening and closing times depending on whether your flight was domestic or international, as well as your method of check-in.
Online check-in was available on the airline's online check-in page. Passengers were able to check-in by using their reservation number or ticket number. Online check-in was available from 24 hours up until two hours before scheduled flight departure time.
Airport check-in closed 60 minutes before scheduled flight departure time for all flights. To check-in at the airport, passengers must present the relevant travel documents to one of the airline check-in agents at the airline check-in desk.

Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport is the main airport serving Azerbaijan's capital, Baku and was the hub airport for Buta Airways. The airport is split into two passenger terminals and two cargo terminals. Both terminals serve a mix of international and domestic flights.
