For those of us who love to travel, Earth Month is the perfect moment to stop and think about how our adventures impact the world we're so excited to see. If we’re being honest, hopping on a plane to some far-flung country is pretty amazing, but unfortunately, it can also come with a big environmental cost.

Finding ways to keep travelling while being kinder to our planet is essential. Perhaps choosing eco-friendly airlines, thinking about more direct routes, or even looking into ways to balance out our flight's footprint. Let’s see if we can make small, impactful changes that will allow us to keep exploring the world with a much more mindful approach.

This Earth Month, check out these 10 incredible destinations that are leading the way in ecotourism. From lush rainforests to stunning coral reefs, these locations offer unforgettable experiences while prioritising sustainability. Get ready to plan your next eco-conscious adventure!

Which eco-friendly destinations should I visit?

1. The Galapagos Islands 🐢

One of the world's earliest ecotourism destinations, the Galapagos Islands, is a unique UNESCO World Heritage site and home to the highest level of endemism anywhere on the planet.

Looking for some eco-friendly activities to do whilst you’re there? Check out the iconic research station. Ever wondered how they're protecting the iconic giant tortoises? Book a visit to the Charles Darwin Research Station and step into a real-life conservation lab! Grab the opportunity to see baby tortoises being cared for, learning about their breeding program, and discover the challenges that come with looking after a prized species. Most importantly, understand their vital role in the Galapagos ecosystem! If you prefer to be out on the water, book one of the popular boat trips in the surrounding Pacific Ocean and experience respectful close encounters with wildlife like giant tortoises, marine iguanas, sea lions and Darwin’s finches. Smaller vessels are used for these trips, with around 16-20 people on board at any one time, with experienced guides who follow tight sustainable practices.

Sustainability Focus

The Galapagos Islands are one of the most naturally pristine areas in the world so you wouldn't want to disturb that, would you? If you're planning a visit to this archipelago, there a few important rules set by the Galapagos National Park that you must follow:

  • Do not leave the tourist trail
  • Keep your distance from the animals – maintain at least two metres distance from all animals and NEVER touch them.
  • Don’t feed the animals
  • Take only photos, leave only footprints
  • Do not use a flash

Marine plastic pollution is a specific focus for the Galapagos Islands, and as a visitor, you can implement small changes to ensure you're practising as an eco-tourist. The Governing Council of Galapagos has placed a ban on single-use plastics therefore it is critical you bring a refillable water bottle, use a waterproof, reusable dry bag and leave toiletries that contain micro-beads at home.

How do I fly to the Galapagos?

There are no direct flights to The Galapagos Islands, and instead tourists are required to fly into Ecuador first at either Quito (Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport) or Guayaquil (José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport). Once arrived at either destination, a connecting flight can be made for the onward journey with Avianca and LATAM Airlines.

2. Borneo 🌺

Home to the world's oldest rainforest and to high levels of biodiversity, Borneo is a popular eco-tourism destination situated in South East Asia.

If you're looking for some eco-friendly activities to participate in during your visit to Borneo, then why not head over to the Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and prepare for a wildlife encounter that will tug at your heartstrings! Get a privileged peek into their world and observe their natural behaviours whilst under the close watch of the skilled conservation workers who are working to protect this beautiful species. If nature exploration is more your sort of thing, Mulu National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site that boasts cave systems so vast they could house cathedrals – seriously, the largest cave chamber on the planet by area! Guided tours are offered both day and night to help you discover the caves, and at dusk, you can revel in the experience of witnessing a bat exodus straight out of the cave's mouth.

Sustainability Focus

To protect the beauty of Borneo, there a few things to be mindful of when planning your visit. Sustainability is a huge focus in this area and therefore accommodation providers in Borneo are promoting sustainable eco-tourism practices through things such as waste management, plastic use, water management and noise pollution. When choosing your accommodation, why not check to see if they operate some of these processes?

We're sure you're keen to be an eco-friendly tourist, therefore we've got some more helpful tips to be a sustainable visitor:

  • Spend money in local communities and pay park fees
  • Check ingredients lists on your products and avoid any that contain palm oil
  • Do not use flash photography
  • Book with local divemasters to avoid irresponsible diving near protected reefs
  • Visit only genuine research centres or wildlife sanctuary's

Costa Rica being a global leader for ecotourism means that sustainable tourism practices are maintained constantly. Notably, in Costa Rica, there is an essential program called the Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST) Program*, which is designed to set standards for eco-friendly practices within the tourism industry. The certification is there to measure and review processes used by tourism businesses and is something that tourists to the region should be aware of when choosing accommodation, activity providers, catering options and so on.

Doing your best to be an eco-tourist? We believe you! But just in case you need a little help, check out some of our top tips for being an eco-conscious traveller:

  • Opt for activities that don't require fossil fuels
