KM Malta Airlines is the flag carrier of Malta. It commenced operations at the end of March 2024. This new Maltese airline is currently using Malta International Airport as its hub. KM Malta Airlines was established to replace the former flag carrier, Air Malta, which has encountered financial difficulties over recent years and is no longer operating.
In August 2022, the Maltese government considered dissolving Air Malta if the European Union didn't provide additional financial state aid. The decision on the airline's future was then delayed until the end of 2022. By October 2022, Air Malta carried out extensive cuts to its route network and frequencies, including the termination of several destinations.
In April 2023, the EU declined a €290 million state aid injection for Air Malta which ultimately led to the government announcing the closure of Air Malta in March 2024. KM Malta Airlines has retained Air Malta's former fleet of 8 x Airbus A320 aircraft. It currently flies to over 15 destinations.

Malta's forthcoming national carrier, KM Malta Airlines, has received official approval for an Air Operator Certificate and Licence from the Maltest Civil Aviation Directorate. Set to replace Air Malta in March 2024, the new airline aims to strengthen connectivity between Malta and destinations across Europe.
Despite the discontinuation of Air Malta after 50 years due to mismanagement and the European Commission's rejection of a €290 million aid package, KM Malta Airlines plans to retain the Air Malta branding. The new airline has revealed its Summer 2024 Schedule, featuring just over 8500 flights across 17 airports and 15 cities, with a focus on key European destinations.
The operational plan includes over 280 weekly flights and the recruitment of approximately 375 employees. KM Malta Airlines will operate a modern fleet of 8 x Airbus A320neos, prioritising environment performance and passenger comfort. The airline's strategic vision involves contributing to Malta's economic development and establishing itself as a sustainable and successful carrier.
