Indianapolis International Airport (IATA: IND) is an international airport located just outside of Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana, United States. Within the United States, it is the 45th busiest in terms of passenger traffic, with 2018 seeing the airport serve 9.4 million passengers.

The airport was first opened as Indianapolis Municipal Airport in 1931 but was later renamed to Weir Cook Municipal Airport and then back to Indianapolis International Airport in 1976. The airport not only operates domestic flights within the U.S. but also international passenger services to destinations in Canada, Mexico, the Dominican Republic and France.

Indianapolis International Airport is located 7 miles southwest of downtown Indianapolis.

Runways and Terminals

Indianapolis International Airport (IND) features three runways:

  • Runway 5L/23R - This primary runway measures 11,200 feet (3,414 meters) in length and 150 feet (46 meters) in width, with a concrete surface.
  • Runway 5R/23L - Parallel to 5L/23R, this runway is 10,000 feet (3,048 meters) long and 150 feet (46 meters) wide, also featuring a concrete surface.
  • Runway 14/32 - Serving as the crosswind runway, it measures 7,278 feet (2,218 meters) in length and 150 feet (46 meters) in width, with an asphalt surface.

These runways accommodate a wide range of aircraft operations, including commercial flights and cargo services.


Colonel Harvey Weir Cook Terminal

In 2008, a new terminal opened at the airport to replace all previous passenger terminals. This terminal was named in honour of Col. Harvey Weir Cook and measures 1,200,000 square feet in size. This cost $1.1 billion to build and has 44 domestic gates and 2 international gates.
