Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, commonly referred to as Hyderabad Airport, is an international airport that serves Hyderabad in India. The airport is named after Rajiv Gandhi, who was a former Prime Minister of India.

The airport was originally built in March 2008, to replace the former commercial airport, Begumpet Airport, who was unable to handle the increasing passenger traffic.

Currently, the airport is a hub for Alliance Air, IndiGo, Blue Dart Aviation, SpiceJet and TruJet. Similarly, the airport is a focus city for Air India, Air Asia India, Go Air and Vistara.

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport is located in Shamshabad, which is 24km south of Hyderabad.

Runways and Terminals

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Hyderabad, India, features two parallel runways:

  • Runway 09R/27L: This is the primary runway, measuring 4,260 meters (13,976 feet) in length, making it one of the longest in Asia. It is fully Code-F compliant, accommodating large aircraft such as the Airbus A380.
  • Runway 09L/27R: Serving as the secondary runway, it is 3,707 meters (12,162 feet) long and is primarily used during maintenance of the primary runway or to manage increased air traffic.

These runways are equipped with Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) to support safe aircraft operations under various weather conditions

There is currently only one passenger terminal, covering a total space of 105,300 m2. It has the capacity for 12 million passengers a year. The terminal is split into two sections, with the western side being for international flights and the eastern side for domestic operations.

How to get to Hyderabad Airport

By Road

You can access the airport from the NH 44, the NH 765 and the Outer Ring Road.


By Public Transport

There is a luxury bus service run by the TSRTC, which operates bus services from the airport to selected destinations within the city of Hyderabad.
