Cuba Do's and Don'ts
- Do bring cash — Although Cuba's government is taking steps to make the country more reliant on card, the majority of the country remains cash-based. So, if you're visiting, make sure you have some cash on you.
- Do tip — Cuba has a tipping culture, especially when you really appreciate the work someone's done. It's recommended to tip around 10% of your bill. Around 70-90% of Cubans live in poverty, so not only is tipping a polite thing to do, but it's a meaningful one.
- Do be aware that the internet is slower in Cuba — As of 2025, Cuba has one of the slowest global broadband speeds. So be aware that you might have to adapt from what you're used to.
- Don't drink tap water — It's not recommended to drink tap water in Cuba because the old pipes can lead to contamination. Instead, buy bottled water. You'll usually be fine if you boil the tap water before drinking it, though.
- Don't take pictures of government buildings — It's illegal to take pictures of government buildings in Cuba, including military buildings and military personnel.
