Book Flights to Burundi

Burundi, often referred to as the 'Roof of Africa', is a small landlocked country in the heart of the African continent, bordered by Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Burundi has had a rough past with numerous civil wars but is slowly working to rebuild and establish peace amongst its ethnic population. Tourism is welcome however we recommend following your country's travel advice if you plan on visiting Burundi.

Burundi gets its nickname from its high altitude - its landscape is largely dominated by the Rift Valley consisting of mountains that rise over 8,500 feet above sea level. There are plenty of challenges for mountaineers with Mount Heha, the highest peak amongst all of Burundi's mountains. But if you're not a fan of heights, you can instead visit the Rusizi National Park and Kibira National Park, both of which are great for casual hiking and wildlife viewing.

Discover Gitega

Gitega, Burundi's current capital, sits on a central plateau surrounded by hills and farmland. For centuries, it served as the seat of the Burundian monarchy, the Mwami, with evidence of this showcased in the National Museum. You can experience the powerful rhythms of Burundian drumming at the Gishora Drum Sanctuary where you'll find massive ceremonial drums once used by the Mwami. From Gitega, you can also take a day trip to Ruyigi, a scenic city with close proximity to Ruvubu National Park where you can spot antelope, hippos and crocodiles in their natural habitat.

Gitega is best experienced during the dry season, from June to August or December to February. This is the peak tourist season though, so flight prices will be higher than normal - we recommend booking your flights at least 6 months in advance to grab the best prices on our platform. Gitega doesn't have an international airport but most visitors fly into Bujumbura International Airport about 40 miles away (1.5 hours by car).
