Bolivia, La Paz

Discover La Paz

If you want to go to the highest capital city in the world, fly to La Paz, Bolivia. It sits at a staggering 11,975 ft above sea level and is located within a canyon carved out by the Choqueyapu River. The Illimani mountain towers over this city, creating a dramatic landscape and unique microclimate rarely seen elsewhere on Earth. La Paz was first inhabited by the indigenous Tiwanaku people long before the Spanish arrived up until 1548, when it became a mining centre. It played an important role in Bolivia's fight for independence in the 1800s.

La Paz is best explored by cable car. It has an extensive cable car system, known as Mi Teleférico, offering stunning views of the city and the mountains that surround it. Down below, you can wander through the Mercado de las Brujas (Witches' Market) to find all sorts of medicinal herbs, potions, amulets and other witchery supplies (also a great place to learn about traditional Aymara beliefs).

La Paz is quite a challenge to get to as there are no direct flights from most major cities in the world, however, you can fly to the neighbouring city of El Alto. Visit La Paz during its dry season (April to October) for the best experience - the weather is sunny with clear skies, but it can be quite cool so pack appropriate clothing before you go!
