FINNCOMM now backed by FLYBE and FINNAIR

It's a continuing theme of this Blog to report the increase in airline consolidations, where airlines are disappearing, merging or being acquired. Today we learnt of one which is due to combine the best of British Regionals (Flybe) with the undoubted long-haul expertise of a major European carrier based in a small home market (FINNAIR) to create a new direction for an established but small Nordic regional airline (FINNCOMM - Finnish Commuter Airlines).

Flybe, Europe's largest regional airline, and Finnair  have together agreed to buy Finland's biggest domestic carrier Finnish Commuter Airlines  for 25 million euros in order to expand in the Baltic market.

It will be interesting to see how this venture develops as FlyBe are very ambitious, but the Scandinavia/Baltic markets at which they are now aiming have strong competition in the form of Norwegian (low cost) and Air Baltic (flag carrier of Latvia operating regional routes with a mix of low fares and business orientated services). If it works, then we expect more of the same in other European regional markets with route pairs which don't have the traffic volume to attract teh likes of Ryanair or Easyjet.

New Booking Capability.. New Site Layout .. New Alternative Airlines

It is spring here in the UK and we've been working hard throughout the last six months to be ready with a new improved Alternative Airlines, as the season of renewal replaces the long nights of winter. Regular bookers will see a dramatically improved availability display with some funky new features and more choice of airlines (particularly on multi sector flights) plus we've tried to make the site easier to navigate and added some more interesting features.

Greece is the news.. Olympic and Aegean Airlines rumours of a merger

Its Friday afternoon after a long busy week with a Trade show, and an airline  launch and a new contract to market a growing  East African airline to the UK market , the main media has been dominated by the collapse of the Greek economy but in our sub world of airlines this has been augmented by a growing rumour that the two Greek airlines, Olympic AIr (the rump of national carrier, Olympic Airlines formed in autumn 2009) and the dynamic independent Aegean Airlines may be discussing a merger.
