'Basic Economy' is a fare type that an airline offers to customers as one of the bundles available in what they called a fare-family. 'Basic Economy' is usually the cheapest fare bundles with the least Economy offerings.
'Basic Economy' tickets are often non-refundable and inflexible. Not only that, it has the least baggage allowance compared to the other bundles available, meaning that there's usually only hand baggage available for passengers. There's usually no free checked baggage allowance.
There are many airlines that are offering 'Basic Economy' tickets for customers, including both low-cost airlines and full-service carriers. In most cases, Basic Economy tickets rarely offer any amenities other than the ticket itself. Therefore, it won't have amenities like priority boarding, seat selection, extra baggage allowance. If the airline has a frequent flyer programme, then the number of points earned will be the least compared to other fare types.
Basic Economy at Air Canada is called Economy Basic. Tickets aren't entitled to any changes or cancellations but ticket upgrades aren't available. Food and drinks onboard can be purchased onboard but inflight entertainment is still available on a personal 22.6cm TV. A piece of carry-on baggage is allowed for free and checked baggage comes with a fee.
Basic Economy on American Airlines offers one piece of carry on baggage and a personal item onboard. However, it doesn't cover any checked baggage on the ticket. Passengers can request for an upgrade and make changes at a later date with a fee. Changes are only available for flights to and from Europe, South America and Africa. Seats can only be selected for a fee.
Passengers on British Airways' Basic Economy can choose their allocated seat at airport check-in for free. If you are travelling on a long-haul flight, you are would also receive a free onboard meal. All Basic Economy passengers have two pieces of hand baggage free regardless, but changes and cancellations come with a fee.
Basic Economy is Delta's cheapest fare type available and with the least amenities onboard. Free non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are available for Basic Economy passengers as well as in-flight entertainment with a wide range of movies and shows. Just like the other airlines, only carry-on baggage is within the free baggage allowance and free allocated seats are only available at airport check-in. Flight changes or upgrades are not permitted for the passengers.
The Basic Economy fare on Lufthansa is called 'Economy Light'. Tickets are the cheapest compared to other fare types, but passengers aren't eligible for flight changes nor refunds. Only one piece of carry-on baggage allowed within the baggage allowance. Seat reservation can only be made for free at airport check-in.
Basic Economy on United Airlines flights permits passengers to carry a personal and one piece of carry-on baggage on selected routes. However, allocated seats prior to airport check-in, flight changes and cancellations are not allowed. Passengers can still redeem their frequent flyer points when flying on Basic Economy.
